Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) Screens

If your room has windows, ceiling lights, or evening ambient light you can't fully block out, a plain white screen will look washed out no matter how bright your projector is. Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screens use angled or textured surfaces to bounce stray room light away from the audience while still reflecting the projector's image forward — which is exactly why they've become the standard pairing for ultra short throw (UST) projectors sitting in living rooms.

Installer tip: Don't try to fix a bright room by simply buying a brighter projector. Past a point, more lumens just means more washed-out ambient light bouncing back too. A properly matched ALR screen solves the actual problem — contrast — instead of brute-forcing it with brightness.

Matching Throw Ratio to Screen Size

Your projector's throw ratio doesn't just tell you where to place it — it directly caps or unlocks your usable screen size, which is why screen shopping should always start with the projector's spec sheet, not the screen catalogue.

The Simple Formula

Throw distance ÷ throw ratio = image width

So if your projector has a throw ratio of 1.5 and you can place it 12 feet from the wall, your maximum image width is roughly 8 feet — regardless of how large a screen you'd like to buy. Buying a screen bigger than what your throw ratio and room allow just means cropping the image or losing focus at the edges.

Working Backwards from Screen Size

If you already know the screen size you want, flip the formula: multiply your target screen width by the projector's throw ratio to find the exact distance you'll need to place the projector.

Pair it with an ALR screen if the room has any window light, since small rooms are rarely used in full darkness every time. A fixed-frame screen also keeps the footprint clean in a space that's already doing double duty as a bedroom.

Best combo: A UST or short-throw projector with a motorised, high-gain ALR screen, or a portable projector screen for flexible, non-permanent setups.

Living rooms rarely get treated like dedicated theatres — they have daytime light, foot traffic, and furniture that shifts around. If you have a room that's used almost exclusively for movies and can be properly darkened, this is where a long-throw projector earns its price advantage and flexibility. Pair it with a standard matte white screen rather than a high-gain or ALR surface — you don't need to fight ambient light that isn't there, and 1.0 gain gives you the most accurate colour and the widest, most even viewing angle for a full row of seating.

Best combo: A brighter portable projector with an inflatable or tripod portable projector screen.
