In these installs, the subwoofer driver is recessed into a wall or soffit as part of the room's acoustic design, often alongside multiple subs positioned for even bass distribution across seating rows. Running these off individual built-in amplifiers would mean an amplifier board buried inside a wall cavity — hard to service, and wasteful when one properly sized external amp can drive two or more passive drivers together. In this scenario, a passive sub wired to a dedicated multi-channel amplifier isn't a compromise; it's the more serviceable, more scalable choice, and it's exactly the kind of setup a premium installer specs when the room is being built around the audio, not the other way around.
